The existence of soul under scientific perspective

Many scholars believe that the soul is something invisible existing after death, with an intimate relationship with memories, feelings of people.

Many religious thinkers since ancient times believed that every person has a soul. This view was the philosopher Plato (424-348 BC) and René Descartes in the 17th century in favor, according to Live Science.

Plato said, people do not learn new things in life they just recall their knowledge from past lives. Therefore, man must have a soul.

Many centuries later, Descartes wrote the work "Passions of the Soul", roughly translated as "The passion of the soul". He argued part of the body and mind of a person are two completely separate things. "Because we have no idea when thinking about your body, there is reason to believe that all kinds of thought exist in the soul we belong", Descartes wrote.

The functions of the soul might be taken over entirely by the brain

One of the arguments given Descartes to prove the existence of the soul related to the brain. The brain is part of the body may be divisible, composed of different parts. Overall soul is inseparable, taking the eternal, undivided being. Therefore, Descartes concluded the brain and the soul must be different. However, the advances in the field of neuroscience shows that Descartes's argument is flawed.

In the 1960s, Roger Sperry, Nobel Prize-winning scholar, pointed out the mind and human consciousness can be split, rejected part of Descartes' theory.

Sperry studied (corpus callosum of many patients. This is the component that connects the left hemisphere and right brain. During the surgery, Sperry callosum severed by patients to control the spread of seizures, preventing and reducing signaling perception, sensation, motor and cognitive information between the two hemispheres brain.

Sperry pointed out, each hemisphere of the brain can perform tasks and process information independently of the remaining hemisphere. In essence, this means that the brain activity generated a double consciousness. Thus Descartes is not right to assert the brain can divide, but the soul (understood as mind, consciousness) is not.

In 1949 Monsignor psychologist Hebb statement of human consciousness is the combination of the inner workings of the brain.

The brain is the organ of the link with the whole body, the outside world and our experience. The brain damage caused by accident, dementia or birth defects will affect the human personality.

According to Plato, one of the functions of the soul is stored memories. But just one powerful hammer knocked in the head may lose your memories for years. If the soul is an invisible entity, separate from the physical body, it will not be injured by hammer strokes and memories stored in the soul will not disappear.

The brain is the organ that links with the whole body, the outside world and our experience.

The neural activity in the brain responsible for disorders of cognitive function and feelings in people with autism. Brain activity capable of changing emotions, human mood. Soul completely unnecessary for this process.

Medication alter human mood provide more evidence against the presence of the soul. If you create chemical imbalances in the brain, such as dopamine reduces hormone, noradrenaline and serotonin in drug tetrabenazine, you can cause depression for some people. Reverse depression may be enhanced by drugs that enhance the function of neurotransmitters in the brain.

The brain is the place where the thoughts, love and hatred, awareness, formation of personality, beliefs, stored memories, make decisions, not the soul, researchers D.K. Johnson at the University of Cambridge, UK, concludes.
